It’s that time of year again. The grandkids are coming to spend the weekend, and you’re under strict orders to limit their TV consumption! But this can be tricky as it’s hard to find things they like when they’re away from home. You might need to think outside the box with quite a few things so you can come up with viable options.
Something that should always be embraced is outdoor garden activities like creating a mini greenhouse. There is so much on offer outside, and it can be a magical place for kids. And you need to try to show them this wherever you can. Have a look at my list of garden activities you could get the kids to enjoy when they come over for a visit.
Plant Flowers Get the kids to strap on their green fingers and plant some flowers. This is always a good bet because it means that it will be an ongoing project. Each time they call around they can check on how their flowers are doing. This exercise might be long and laborious, so it’s best to go with something like bulbs. These are cheap, readily available, and you can grow them in a pot. They are the perfect choice for a flower planting exhibition. Grow Vegetables As well as flowers you might want to go the other way and think about getting them to grow vegetables. This is fun because it involves food, and can get the children more interested in vegetables. Growing vegetables is an excellent way of instilling green values. And it helps the kids appreciate the value of organic produce. You can even try to make it interesting by going through different types of vegetables as well. Water Fight What children don’t love to have a water fight?! This is the perfect entertaining activity for the summertime. It lets the kids burn off energy and enjoy themselves. And the best part is that it’s adult-friendly, so you can join in too. Think about the sorts of water fights you could have. It might be good to have a mixture of water pistols, water balloons, and buckets of water. It’s a great way to have fun and bond with the children. Feed the Birds Gardens are the perfect place for birds to congregate, and you can use this to your advantage. Get a bird table and some bird feed and you can spend time feeding the birds. You’re going to get different types of birds depending on the time of year it is and where you live. And this can be enthralling for the children. They will be able to have fun, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world at the same time.
It’s important to make sure the children stay stimulated and interested. The problem is that it’s easy to just pop them in front of the TV or games consoles. Kids don’t play outside like they used to anymore, but you can change all that. Have a look at this post, and use the ideas to help encourage the children to play outdoors.
