Long distance friendships and family relationships can be really difficult for both parties. It’s particularly hard if there are kids on either side, and you feel as though you’re missing them growing up. Buying them birthday and Christmas gifts is a great way to show you still appreciate them, but making those gifts family oriented reminds them that they’re an important part of your life. If you want to send a loved one a personalized family gift for their special day, or just to remind them that you miss them, have a look at some of these great ideas.
A family portrait
Will the prevalence of social media, your friends on the other side of the world can see photos and videos of you and your family on a daily basis, so a framed photograph seems a little obsolete as a gift. Instead, why not go one better and commission a family portrait? It could be in any style you like, depending on your tastes and that of the receiver, but it can be a really fun and different gift to receive, and something they will always cherish.
The next step up from family portrait is family figurines, such as custom bobbleheads or dolls. When they’re good quality, the likeness is striking, and they make a great comedy gift. You could even do it over the course of a year, including the family pet, sending one at a time until they receive the full set. This is particularly great if there are young children at the receiving end of the gifts.
While social media has made sending photographs pretty pointless, sending photographs on useful everyday objects means that the gift receiver gets to see your beautiful little family constantly. There are companies which can put photographs on basically anything you desire, so get creative. Coffee mugs, cushions, and keyrings are standard practice, but use your imagination - bottles of whiskey, dishcloths, basically anything your heart desires!
Make a family DVD
For every special moment, we’re always there to get a video recording - that’s our prerogative as moms, right? So why not make all your special videos and photos into a lovely, personal DVD and post it to loved ones around the country? Yes, they might be able to see those videos on Facebook, but if you include some bonus footage - family deleted scenes, so to speak - then you’ve got yourself a winning present.
Personalized care package
Care packages are a great way to show long distance friends and family that you’re thinking of them, and they’re brilliant for getting the whole family involved. Ask the little ones to choose items to put into the package that they think their extended family will enjoy, and include a few of their drawings for a really personal touch - it helps to keep the kids occupied for a bit too, as an added bonus. You could even include other things from this list, like a family figurine or a DVD of special moments - the possibilities are endless.
Thoughtful gifts for long distance relatives are a great way to make them feel like they’re still an important part of your family, so go to town on them!
