Children get bored easily, so it’s important to have plenty of activities on hand to keep them entertained. Instead of sticking them in front of the television or computer, how about getting creative and doing some art projects? Kids love making and designing things, so for keeping them busy, arts and crafts projects are perfect.
To give you some ideas for fun art projects to do with your grandchildren, I’ve put together a list. Hopefully, your little ones will love these ideas as much as mine do.
Get creative with nature
If your grandchildren love spending time outside, a nature-based art project is perfect. Give each child a bag and ask them to fill it with as many natural materials as they can find - from flowers to pine cones, anything goes.
Once you get home, lay the contents of each bag out on the table. For flat materials, like leaves, flowers, etc., collages are perfect. For items like pine cones, cover them with PVA glue and glitter is a fun and pretty art project. If your grandchildren have collected any stones, these can be used to paint mini pictures on. Or for a less messy alternative, they can be drawn on using felt tip pens.
Make DIY teddies
Learning to sew is important for every child - male or female, and a great way to teach them is by creating DIY teddies. All you need for this is an old towel, dried rice, and a sewing machine or a good old fashioned needle and thread. If you like the idea of using a sewing machine, check out this guide to the best sewing machine for beginners.
Fold the towel in half and get each child to draw their teddy shape on there. Then cut it out, making sure to cut two identical designs out for each child. Lay the pieces back to back so that any ink from the drawing is on the inside, and then sew around the edge, leaving a small hole for the rice. Turn the material so that the seams are on the inside and then add the rice and sew up the hole. For facial features, glue on googly eyes and a nose.
Sew cross stitch bookmarks
A fun and exciting craft for kids is making cross stitch bookmarks. All you need is a couple of pieces of material, needles and thread. Show your grandchild how to do a cross stitch and then draw a template onto their material for them to follow.
This can be a great craft activity, just watch out for anyone sewing their bookmark to their clothes. It might also be a good idea to give your grandchildren bodkins instead of needles - these are thicker and not as sharp.
Make musical instruments
For children who love music, making DIY instruments can be a lot of fun. The great thing about this art project is that it’s super easy to do. There are so many instruments you can make. Get creative and encourage your grandchildren’s musical aspirations.
To make a DIY guitar, all you need is an old tissue box and some rubber bands to use as strings. To make a maraca, all you need is an old juice bottle and some dried rice or peas.
There you have it, lots of fun art ideas for keeping the grandchildren entertained.
