One of the things I miss most of my kids' action-packed, exhausting, but fun childhood years is reading time together. Now, don't get me wrong- I continued to read to them as they grew older. There are many important reasons for continuing to read to your kids even though they can read for themselves. I've written about this in a previous article and included some suggestions for encouraging your grandkids to continue to enjoy reading.
But there are important reasons for reading to little ones, too, and not just for enjoyment. You can check out 10 of those benefits here. It's a special time when your little ones snuggle onto your lap for a book and my memories are filled with such moments.
Now, as a grandmother, I can relive those times and enjoy reading time again with my grandkids. Pictures storybooks are especially enjoyable. They are quick and easy to read. The story is told with words and pictures. And every age-group seems to enjoy them. No one ever seems to outgrow picture storybooks.
Picasso, the Green Tree Frog is one of our favourites. And fortunately, even if you don't own the book, you can read this one with your grandkids. Era Publications provides online books for kids and families to enjoy as well as supplementary activities.
Picasso is a beautiful green frog. Amongst the trees, he turns green. In the mud, he turns brown. In the water, he turns blue. But one day, he lands in a jar of jelly beans and turns all sorts of colours. Read it with your kids.. I know they'll enjoy it.
You can find Picasso, read the book online, and have fun creating scenes with characters from the book.
If you sign up for their site, you can enjoy many more titles from their site.
You can also read along with this book with an online reading on YouTube, see below, but I don't think it's quite as clear as the presentation on Era Publications.
But don't stop once you've read the book together. Extend the fun with some of these colour mixing and painting activities:
* add some food colouring to milk and watch the colours swirl and mix together.
* sprinkle salt over icecubes and then add liquid water colours for more colour fun
* create a mess-free colour mixing lightbox activity with hair gel and colours in zip-seal bags.
Enjoy the book together and then create some memories with these additional colour activities.
Life as a grandma.. it's no 'quiet, restful days in the rocking-chair'. It's filled with activity, excitement and lots of family fun. Please share it with me.
